Founded in 1891, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, was one of the first schools in the south that was built and founded to provide a technical education to the freed slaves in the region. In fact, when the school began it was called, The Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race. Today, however, it is one of the nation’s leading producer’s of African American engineers and continues to promote the fields of mathematics and the sciences.
 Currently, NC A&T University offers 99 undergraduate majors, 50 master’s degrees and several doctoral degrees in mechanical, electrical, and industrial engineering, and the engineering school currently partners with NASA. Newly added programs such as environmental studies and global studies create an atmosphere that is always anticipating the future and thinking ahead.
